Owakudani Kuro Tamago

Feb 2, 2010

Dear Friends,

Owakudani
is one of the most attractive and adventuresome areas located in Hakone. Why adventuresome???
Coz you can enjoy the view of a volcanic landscape created 400 thousand years ago, and look
The volcanic fume is still erupting!

My son was so excited of this wild scenery.
Kids were running up towards the smoke.
Then they caught the odor of sulfur….
Yes, it smells like rotten eggs…

I, myself, have very strong memories towards this smell from when I visited Owakudani some 30 years ago.

After taking a 15-minute nature walk, you will find the Tamago-chaya (Egg store).
The famous kuro-tamago (Black eggs) are sold here. They are boiled in hot sulfurous mud water which is very specific to Owakudani.

According to Japanese legend, every egg you eat will prolong your life by 7 years.
Kuro-tamago is a very popular life-prolonging food.

One black egg adds years to your life.
Two black eggs adds years to your life....

My son was not so enthusiastic of eating the egg because of its looks. But once he had a bite, he was willing to eat another.

Oops, I forgot to mention, Owakudani is very close to the Hakone Open Air Museum which I mentioned in my previous post.

Love Always,
Elena
