Delicious Autumn Food
Sep 29, 2009
In Japan, autumn is often referred to as “Shokuyoku no Aki”, or “Autumn of Appetite”. That’s because there’s so many delicious foods in autumn. Some examples are matsutake mushrooms, eggplants, chestnuts, etc.
But the autumn food I like the most is samma, or Pacific Saury.
It is said that this year, sammmas are fatter and tastier than usual. I recently had the chance to enjoy broiled sammma. With a twist of sudachi, a type of citrus fruit, the sammma will taste super! Oh, I should also say that it goes best with cold beer!

Let me introduce another one of my favorite types of fish. It’s called kinmedai (literal translation: golden-eyed sea bream).
It is an expensive type of fish that is a delicay of Izu. (For more information on Izu, check out Coco’s blog.)
A special way of eating kinmedai is ochazuke, or rice with green tea.
This is a package of a kinmedai ochazuke set that I received as a gift from Izu. The fish is cut into little pieces and seasoned with ingredients such as seaweed. Put them on top of a bowl of hot rice. On a hot day, you can pour cold green tea. On a rather cold day, you can pour hot green tea. They both taste delicious!
If you happen to visit Japan during autumn, be sure to try out the special autumn flavors!
Luv Always,
Lily
